Wegner Welcomes Matches to Safeco Field

Major League Baseball (MLB) Umpire Mark Wegner (see Bio) joined the BLUE for Kids umpire roster this weekend. Originally scheduled to host one mentor/youth match of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County on Sunday at Seattle's Safeco Field, Mark met matches on Saturday as well when Marvin Hudson stepped away from the game for a few days.

On Saturday, mentor Shirley Thom with Allisen (pictured on the left in top photo) and mentor Audra Black along with Billy (pictured at the right) took to their seats after meeting briefly with Mark. In addition to an umpiring crew autographed baseball, everyone received sunflower seeds and gum ("must haves for any ballgame", says Mark).

Allisen and Shirley are HUGE baseball fans. (Shirley was a Pony League coach for four years and has also done a bit of umpiring as well.) This was Billy's first ever Seattle Mariners baseball game - Audra, thanks for being there and making this possible for Billy.

On Sunday, mentor Kevin Apgar attended the game with Marcus. "Everything worked out great", said Mark. "Kevin and Marcus were waiting for me when I walked out. We got some pictures and got to talk a little. Marcus was very excited and Kevin is a really nice guy." Pictured from L-R are Mark, Marcus, and Kevin.

The visiting Detroit Tigers managed to sweep the home town Mariners this weekend but the opportunity for Bigs and Littles to spend time together at the ballpark was indeed a winner.

A huge thank you to Wendy Page, Director of Partnership Development for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County for identifying three terrific matches!

Dear Mark. I was thrilled when we got the call from Samuel and Blue For Kids that you were offering three pairs of tickets to a Mariners game. It was not hard to come up with three matches that we knew LOVED baseball. We thank Blue For Kids for helping our Bigs provide a super special outing, and when we say super...we mean SUPER! What a privilege it is to be part of such a wonderful organization like Big Brothers Big Sisters. If anyone has ever thought of making a child smile and feel good about themselves, or has wanted to let them know they are worthy and that there are many opportunities for them to succeed in life. And most importantly, that someone cares about who they are and what they have to say. Then this is the program for you to be involved with! I urge all of you to make the call to your local BBBS agency and become part of a wonderful team "Bigs and Littles"...And who knows...maybe you too could be called up to the Majors to participate in Blue For Kids! Be A Friend. Be A Mentor. Just Be There. Wendy B Page, Director of Partnership Development & Marketing, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County.

Mark,
Once again I just want to thank you for all you did for Marcus and myself to make our day so special and memorable. What an awesome organization BLUE for Kids is!!! Marcus absolutely loved the autographed baseball, the game ball, sunflower seeds and gum. The view from our seats could not have been any better. It was very nice to meet you and get a couple of photos of the three of us. Thanks for planting a life-long memory for Marcus. I really appreciate what you do for BBBS. I am so excited for future "Bigs and Littles" to have the same opportunity that Marcus and I had.
Sincerely,
Kevin Apgar

A HUGE THANK YOU to Mark, Samuel, and the Blue for Kids organization! Billy and I had the time of our lives. Our seats were so great, Billy spent a lot of time looking out for foul balls. Thanks Mark for the guided tour, and for bringing us out to the field for some pictures. The whole experience made Billy feel truly special and important. Blue for Kids has given him a memory to cherish for a lifetime. You are truly appreciated for what you do.
