St. Louis Split

Three mentor/youth matches of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri joined umpires Marvin Hudson and Mark Wegner at Busch Stadium this weekend as the Cardinals battled on the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cardinals entered the weekend in a tie for the National League Central Division with the Cincinnati Reds.

On Saturday, Marvin met mentor Kelli Barton with her little sister Brittany and Angie Haddock with her little sister Rachel. 'Thrilled' is the word Marvin used to describe their meeting because the majority of matches who participate in BLUE for Kids events tend to be male. Here's a picture of everyone (L-R) Brittany, Kelli, Marvin, Angie, and Rachel. The home town Cardinal offense was explosive on Saturday and won the game 9-1. The win and a Cincinnati Reds loss put the Cardinals alone in first place.

On Sunday, mentor Kevin Chandler and his Little Brother Xavier attended the final game of the series as guests of Mark Wegner. Although they scored three runs in both the 6th and 7th inning, the Cardinals could not overcome three errors in the game and fell short 7-6 to the Diamondbacks. They split the weekend games but the Cardinals remained in first place as the Reds were swept by the Phillies.

Marvin and Mark wish to thank mentors Kelli, Angie, and Kevin for taking time to be a friend to their little sisters and brother. Also, thanks to Jamie Pfau and Kate Dupoch of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri for helping set up the ticket opportunities for their matches. I would like to thank Big Brother Big Sister for choosing Xavier & me to go to the Cardinals-Diamondbacks game Sunday along with BLUE for Kids. Xavier and I were able to meet for several minutes with Mark Wegner prior to the game, and even were taken to the field. The attached photos are of Xavier, Mark, and me at the field as well as a picture Mark took of the two of us. Our seats were on the first base side in the second deck, which allowed us a good view to make sure Mark made all the proper calls at first base. The game was exciting, though a little cold for mid-May! We were on our feet when Albert Pujols hit a deep drive to right field that would've tied the game in the 9th, but was 2 feet short of going over the fence. Xavier's favorite D-Backs player, Luis Gonzalez, had quite a day going 4 for 5.

This was quite the experience, and Xavier and I enjoyed being led through the inner hallways of the new Busch Stadium, and came to our seats through areas we would normally have not been able to see.

Thanks so much for the opportunity.

A note for Marvin Hudson....It was an honor to meet you! Rachel and I really appreciate receiving the tickets, signed baseballs, and picture. You did a great job of umpiring--we agree with every call you made! ;-) Thanks for taking the time to talk and laugh with us. You definitely made a positive impression. We'll never forget the day we met Marvin Hudson!

Thanks again,
Angie Haddock and Rachel
