A Foster Care First for Us in Los Angeles

As we broaden the scope of our ticket programs, we have decided to learn more about and extend opportunities to children in foster care. On Sunday, umpire Mark Wegner invited Maria Diaz, the legal guardian to Joseph, Jacob, and Martin to Dodger Stadium for the game between the Dodgers and Pirates. LA entered the Sunday contest winners of three straight while the Pirates were on a string of bad luck losers of their last ten.

Rafael Furcal of the Dodgers hit a two run single in the fourth inning to get the Dodgers going and Nomar Garciaparra hit a home run in the 7th to help LA to a series sweep of the Pirates. West coast traffic delays prevented the family from meeting up with Mark before the game but we hope everyone enjoyed the game anyway.

Lisa-Marie Kaye is a Children Services Administrator for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Lisa, thank you for all of your help in making the day possible for Maria and the kids. You went above and beyond in your efforts to coordinate this with us and we look forward to establishing a long-term relationship with your department. We also wish to thank Mary Shaw and others for their role in working with us. You all are fantastic!

Mentors of Milwaukee

Three matches from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee were guests of umpires Marvin Hudson and Mark Wegner this weekend for games between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers. The series was very important for the Brewers as they try to stay close to the Cardinals in the National League Central Division race.

On Saturday, June 10th, mentor George Gilman and little brother Shane (pictured above) joined mentor Joseph Foy and DeMarko (pictured right) as Marvin's guests. Corey Hart's RBI single in the eighth inning drove in the winning run as the Brewers overcame an early three-run deficit to defeat the Cardinals. It was the 18th comeback win this year at home for the Brewers.

The next day, Tori Filzen and Kamaria were guests of Mark Wegner and hoped for another comeback victory as the Cardinals jumped to a 7-3 lead. Milwaukee fought hard to keep pace early, hitting three home runs and scoring in each of the first four innings. But the Brewers couldn't get over the hump and fell in the rubber game of a three-game set.

George, Joseph, and Tori...BLUE for Kids salutes your efforts. Thanks for everything you do to give your kids a positive influence and fun times like going to a Big League game.

Kate Mewes is a Match Support Specialist and Julie Murdoch is the Chief Program Officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee. Thank you both for all of your support in helping us send a few matches to the game.

Decisive 8th Inning Dooms Dodgers

Mentor, Steve Zelman, and his little brother Tre from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles visited Dodger Stadium on Sunday as guests of umpire Marvin Hudson. It was a sizzling 89 degree day and the Dodgers were looking to take the four game series after winning 2 of the previous 3 games against the Phillies.

Tight game! After tying the baseball game at 3 in the bottom of the 7th inning on a Kenny Lofton single, the Dodgers gave up 3 more runs to the Phillies and just didn't have enough for a comeback. The Phillies won the game 6-4 to earn a split of the four game series.

Hey Steve...we'll add a digital photo that Marvin has of you and Tre in a couple of days. A BLUE for Kids thank you for all that you do as a mentor!

We would also like to thank Vickie Lau, VP of Programs for BBBS of Greater Los Angeles for setting Steve and Tre up for a fun day at the park.
